My prediction: Paul knows he isn't going to win the GOP nomination, the lackluster performance of the field at large notwithstanding. He is positioning himself for a Libertarian/other 3rd party/independent run in the general.
Not a bad way to end a storied career in US politics, I guess. As I've mentioned, I like Paul as a lone voice of sanity in congress, but I don't think he'd make a good president. He does have the opportunity to be Ross Perot to Obama's Bill Clinton...which frankly, a GOP that is not serious about governing richly deserves.

i think paul enjoys preaching his gospel, and thats what he's all about. he's had a sucessful life, he dont need the political gig.
and ya know what? i think the GOP has enuf disaffected former voters that if they put somebody offensive up, they will vote third party paul maybe in enough numbers to sway the election.
I definitely think he could be a spoiler for Romney, Pawlenty or (shudder) Bachmann. He could almost certainly outpoll the difference between Obama and the GOP candidate in handful of swing states.
That said, I still think the election is Obama's to lose, barring a major economic downturn in the next 18 months.
